The Plains Hotel

1600 Central Avenue, Cheyenne, Wyoming (307) 638-3311

Plains HotelThe beautiful Plains Hotel has been around since the early 1900’s, when it first opened its doors to settlers of Cheyenne in 1911. The elegant hotel was enjoyed by cattle barons and oil tycoons, as well as travelers on their way to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. It went through a recent renovation, described as Western High Style.

However, a sordid story from its past continues to haunt the Plains Hotel to this day. The story involves a murder-suicide right there in the hotel. Apparently a couple checked in, but never checked out. The wife, Rosie and her husband checked into the hotel on their honeymoon. One night, the husband went to the lounge, where he met someone new - a prostitute - on his honeymoon (!?!)  While he busy squiring his new philly, Rosie came down to find him. She spotted the pair together, and watched as they left the lounge and headed upstairs together. Rosie followed them upstairs to the woman's room on the fourth floor. In a jealous rage, she killed her husband and the other woman. She the returned to their honeymoon suite and shot and killed herself.

All three ghosts have been reported by guests and staff of the hotel. Rosie’s ghost is said to be dressed in a long blue gown and said to wander the second floor. Stuck in despair, she’s been heard alternatively laughing and crying. Her husband, dressed in a black dress coat with tails, black pants, black boots and a large, shiny silver button on his white shirt, has been seen in various places including the fifth floor and the basement. The other woman, er, prostitute has been spotted wearing a short red dress with white lace.
